Special Considerations and Contraindications

for Using Far Infrared Therapy and the BioMat

Heat Settings and Use:

  • Use of the BioMat on high heat settings should be limited to short periods of time. Do NOT use high settings overnight.  Lower temperature settings can be used overnight.
  • Children, invalids, paralyzed or non-verbal persons should be monitored at all times while on the BioMat.
  • Never use high heat settings on children, or on women who are pregnant or nursing.
  • Avoid using any heat on infants.
  • For complete information on heat settings and uses see the BioMat Settings Guide.

Organ Transplants: Patients who have undergone organ transplants should not use the BioMat. After an organ transplant, patients take immunosuppressant (anti-rejection) drugs to help prevent their immune system from attacking or rejecting the new organ.   The use of the BioMat's far infrared rays increases immune system function which will tell the body to attack the new organ.

Pacemakers/Defibrillator:  Anyone using an internal pacemaker and/or defibrillator is encouraged to consult a physician before using the BioMat.  In general, far infrared heating pads have not been shown to interfere.  However there may be a small chance of causing interference occasionally.  Recommended use is on low heat only (95F-113F).   The use of the BioMat increases circulation of the blood which can cause an increase in heart beat.   For person's with a defibrillator, do not lay the BioMat directly over your device.   Anyone using an external pacemaker should not use the BioMat.

Brain Tumor:  We recommend anyone with a brain tumor to use the BioMat on low heat only (95F-113F).

Bypass Surgery:  Anyone who has undergone bypass surgery should use the BioMat on low heat only (95F-113F).  The use of the BioMat increases circulation of the blood which can cause normal blood vessels to expand.  Some people who have gone through bypass surgery experience discomfort since their blood vessels cannot expand.

Certain Conditions:  We recommend anyone with the following ailments use the BioMat on low heat (95F-113F) or negative ions only.   It is inadvisable to raise the core temperature to high levels of persons with Adrenal Suppression Disorder, Addison's Disease, Adrenal Insufficiency, Systematic Lupus Erythematosus and Heat Sensitive Multiple Sclerosis (MS).   Anyone with other types of MS can use the BioMat at any setting.

Diabetics: People with high blood pressure, allergies, asthma and severe toxicity should begin using the BioMat at very low heat settings only (95F-113F) and limit sessions to 20-30 minutes until longer times can safely be established.

Fever:  We recommend anyone experiencing a high fever to use the BioMat with no heat and negative ions only.

Hemorrhage: Hemophiliacs and anyone predisposed to hemorrhage should avoid far infrared or any type of therapy that would induce vasodilation and increase bleeding.

High Blood Pressure/Hypertension:  People with chronically high blood pressure (hypertension) will want to use the BioMat with caution and on low heat only (95F-113F).  Sudden changes in body temperature may cause an increase in blood pressure.

Insensitivity to Heat:  We recommend that anyone with diseases associated with a reduced ability to sweat or insensitivity to heat us the BioMat with no heat and negative ions only.

Joint Injuries:  Anyone with recent or acute joint injuries should use the BioMat with no heat and negative ions only.   Injuries should not be headed within the first 48 hours, as joints that are chronically hot or swollen may respond poorly to heat.

Menstruation:  Use of the BioMat during menstruation poses no risk, but may increase menstrual flow, due to the heating of the low-back area. Individuals who wish to avoid this may choose to discontinue use of the BioMat during the menstrual cycle.  Use of the BioMat can help minimize physical and emotional discomfort of the premenstrual and menstrual periods.

Newborn Babies/Infants:  We recommend parents with newborns to wait until their baby is at least six months old before using the BioMat on low heat only (95F-113F) or negative ions only.  Ensure adult supervision at all times during BioMat use, especially with children who are not ambulatory or mobile.

Oxygen masks:  Use of the BioMat oxygenates the body; therefore, oxygen masks should not be worn while on the BioMat.  Use of the mask can be resumed, if necessary, after the BioMat session is over.

Pregnancy:  Excessive tempeartuers have a potential for fetal damage during early months of pregnancy or suspicion of pregnancy, so  discontinuation of far infrared therapy is recommended in the first trimester. Use of the BioMat after the first trimester should be limited to low heat settings only (95F-113F).   The BioMat can be a useful tool for fertility enhancement as well as postpartum care.

Prescription Drugs:  If you are taking prescription drugs, check with your physician or pharmacist about possible changes in the drug’s effect due to an interaction with the effects of far infrared therapy.  Individuals taking corticosteroids may experience some redness of the skin.  If redness occurs, use of the BioMat should be discontinued until the course of medication is finished.

Radiation Therapy/Chemotherapy:  We recommend anyone is receiving radiation treatments or chemotherapy to use the BioMat on low to medium heat (95F-131F).

Surgical Implants: Metal implants and artificial joints generally reflect far infrared rays and therefore are not heated. Recipients of titanium, metal, ceramic or plastic implants can us the BioMat.  Nevertheless, it is recommended that individuals with such implants consult their surgeon before using far infrared therapy.  Anyone experiencing pain in those implant areas should check with their physician.

Silicone Implants:  Silicone does absorb far infrared rays, but implants/prostheses should not be adversely affected by the BioMat as silicone only melts at temperatures over 200 degrees Celsius (392F).  Still, it is advisable to consult a physician to be certain.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:

Should an individual experience a worsening of any condition, use of the BioMat should be discontinued.  However, some temporary symptoms may be attributed to the detoxification process.  See “Note on Detoxification.”

Individuals with recent, acute joint injuries should avoid heating the joint for the first 48 hours, or until the “hot and swollen” symptoms of the injury pass.  Joints that are chronically swollen may respond poorly to extreme heat. Vigorous heating is strictly contraindicated in cases of  infections within the joints.

Pain should not be experienced while using the BioMat.  Far infrared therapy stimulates areas of the body which may be in disharmony, and this can result in sensations that vary for each individual.  If any pain or discomfort persists for more than 24 hours discontinue use of the BioMat.

A Note on Detoxification:

During detoxification, accumulated toxins are released from cells and organs, passing through the blood stream before leaving through the skin, breath, urine and feces.  The movement of these toxins through the body can produce sensations of being ill, when in fact, the case is quite the opposite; the body is going through healing.  Sometimes this process can release remnants of past illnesses, causing an individual to experience similar, but less severe, symptoms of a past illness.  These symptoms usually pass within a day or two.  See the booklet “Ions and Far Infrared Rays.”

The BioMat is a useful tool for detoxification, but it is important to start out slowly in order to determine what your body can tolerate.  It is also important to drink plenty of pure water to help eliminate toxins from the body.
